Course Description:

The tentative course design features lots of variety:
Orienteering/Trekking: 7-10 miles. Orienteering is spread throughout the race, mostly in small doses, which will break up the paddle and bike sections. The challenge will be staying alert on the bike and paddle so you know where to enter woods to find nearby checkpoints. Because there are not large tracts of land where you have to string together several checkpoints, you don’t have to commit to a large amount of time; you can search for or skip CPs one or two at a time. The terrain is moderately difficult but the vegetation should allow for fairly fast bushwhacking.
Biking: 40-50 miles. A mix of rolling hills and flat sections. Views of rivers, creeks and wetlands abound. A variety of bike surfaces including singletrack, rocky old railroad beds, gravel, two-track and a small amount of paved roads so mountain bikers and cyclocross bikers will each have advantages and disadvantages in different areas. Road bikes are not allowed.
Paddling: 3-6 miles. A mix of gorgeous but challenging twisty creeks and straighter river paddling so short and long boats will have the upper hand at different times. The water will be shallow in August but the current is slow so while you may scrape the bottom at times or have to wade now and then, high-speed collisions with rocks are rare. Those running short on time or not fond of paddling can opt for the short route or skip the paddle altogether (just know you can’t finish higher than anyone who finishes the short paddle section).

Aid Stations:

Water and Gatorade may be available at various points but fill your bladders/bottles when you have the opportunity.
