Course Description:
It's dark. No fancy flood lights, just your headlamp. You're on your fourth lap and pushing to win. The 24 hours of Shale Hell takes you to your limits, and puts you beyond them.
Not quite ready for 24 hours? Our 8 hour option is the perfect compliment to our winter Polar Bear 8h challenge - and if you have crew, or friends who want to help you over night, our single lap 5k or 10k will let them race, and be there for you when the lights go out.
Our annual Benson Bear event offers 5k or 10k distance - competitive and fun laps of our world class permanent obstacle course! This will be running at the same time as the 24 hour & 8 hour race.
24h individual - just you and the course, 24 hours.
24h four person relay - four friends you bring, or make on race day. Tag team the course.
8h individual - just you and the course for 8 daylight hours
10k single lap - One full lap, 60 obstacles
5k single lap - One 5k lap, 30 obstacles

All our races now have a Journeyman (non-competitive division). You may be here for a personal challenge, and the podium is the furthest thing from your mind. Maybe - the worry of completing everything, or penalties is keeping you away from Shale Hill! Journeyman is for you. It's for those who want to take part in our events, but not worry about penalties and obstacle completion. With Journeyman, you are your own competition. If you haven't got an obstacle yet and want to move on - you won't be penalized. Just cheer your friends on, and move on through the course. While you won't be eligible for prizes and podiums - you will get the same race experience, medals, shirts and course - that you take at your own pace, and your own speed.
All support crew members will need to register. The fee is $60pp. This includes a t-shirt, refreshments, access to the course for racer support and insurance.
The first (1st) hour of the 24 Hour Race ""ONLY"" will be done obstacle free. After an hour into the race, an airhorn will sound and you will then start completing obstacles on the course from there on out. If you fail an obstacle, you can retry as many times as you like until you are successful...or...only after you have ""failed"" the obstacle then you can perform the penalty designated. ""Skipping"" an obstacle and taking the penalty in lieu of trying it is considered cheating and will not be tolerated. If you are caught skipping obstacles, you are no longer eligible for prize winnings and will be automatically be put in the journeyman division. Subsequent laps will have different penalties and will be announced on race day. You will be required to mark down on a chart/wipe board your time-in, lap count & time-out before you go out on your next lap.
Team:
Option 1: Four person teams. Find three friends, compete competitively in the open division or as a journeyman. Every lap counts - if you want go out, all four together - thats four laps. If you want to send two people out at a time (recommended at night), or take it relay style - every lap each member of your team completes counts.
Option 2: Two person competitive teams. You and a buddy to push yourselves. Every lap counts. Competitive only, no journeyman option.
