This is a 5k obstacle run around the perimeter of the Gwinnett County Jail in Lawrenceville, GA. The course is a mix of trails/woods, asphalt and entails our large military style obstacle course, which is used for our officers training and swat teams. We also have ‘escaped inmates' along the course to tantalize runners, if they are ‘captured' you recieve a ‘bounty' (door prize!). We have an open competition and a team competition (teams of 4, must finish together).

Best 5k OCR

I've run this race several years now. It just seems to get better and better. I ran the competitive heat first thing before the rain-soaked ground turned to mush and loved it. They have added a few new obstacles, and changed the route slightly making it new to us returning racers. Afterwards, I ran again with my son for his first time. His heart has been captured. We thoroughly enjoyed our time on the course. It had tons of volunteers, and the course was well marked.

This is the first time I needed to speak with an event organizer. My questions were answered, and attention was given to resolve any issue I had. It was a great experience. The law enforcement personell is always polite and helpful.

This year's shirts are fantastic! Love the blend and look forward to wearing it again and again. The added bonus this year: a buff. So cool all the different ways it can be used.

Thanks again Jail-break! We are hooked for life.

Pros and Cons JailBreak Challenge 2017

Overall, this was a really fun race. The course was pretty easy with the obstacles spaced apart at appropriate distances. Separating the open competitive group into different heats was very effective. Course volunteers were available at every obstacle to monitor and direct as needed. The escaping inmates was a nice touch as well.

My main issue was with the disorganization of this race. I had to be rerouted TWICE. I was leading my heat by about 2 minutes about 1.5 miles in, when I entered a trail portion that was not well marked. I saw some tires and logs and thought it was part of the obstacle course. After several minutes of running around trying to find the trail, I ended up at someone's house who had no idea there was a race going on. I finally headed back to the trail entrance. Not even a half a mile later, I came up on a water station and asked which way to turn. The volunteers pointed directly behind me. There was about 5 runners within 10 yards who also turned as well. A minute later, a volunteer drove up and told us that we had missed a turn a while back. So about 5-10 runners had to be rerouted back onto the course.

It appeared to me that there were enough course volunteers; they just weren't well placed. The course was also not very well marked, and for an obstacle course that changes between asphalt, grass, and trails, this can be very confusing. The volunteers staffing the water stations should also know the course within their vicinity to give proper directions.

I was slightly frustrated at not placing due to being rerouted twice. The course was still fun, and I finished in about 34 minutes despite having run more than a mile longer than the marked course. I would probably run this race again now that I have a better idea of where to turn. The volunteers were all friendly and there was plenty of encouragement for the runners.
