Good Local Run

Terrain is the main feature here. Even the flat areas through grass had enough ruts and holes that you needed to keep your eyes open for ankle turning dangers. Although there aren't any hills in the course, the course leads through swampy ponds and streams, with underwater hazards (holes, sodden logs, rocks, snapping turtles, etc.) that are sure to slow you down or just trip you up. If getting muddy is your gig, you don't walk away from this one clean. One downside was that when the course went through the wooded trail areas, it became difficult to pass, especially if people were walking together in front of you, although they typically move when they realize you're needing to go around.

It's a family style run, so most of the man-made obstacles are pretty easy and built so that the majority of people can get through them if they try. There are none of them particularly hard, outside of a wall or two, but even those had easy and medium difficulty options for people like me who have the vertical leap of a brick. In addition, there are a couple of other events like the cinder block drag that was harder than it looked, and I saw a number of people give up on it. The waits on the lines for the obstacles usually weren't more than a couple of minutes at the beginning to no wait by the time you get halfway thru the run. There were three water/Gatoraide stations, and I saw medical teams in a couple of different places along the route.

This is first and foremost a family event and run by a local church, so there's no beer and no party to speak of. The food selection is extremely limited, and the music was slightly lame too. After watching some of the other competiors finishing, we bolted to go get some food off site.

The event itself is well run, and there are plenty of volunteers working to give direction. There was also a mini-run for Kids. Other than that, there was little to keep you occupied at the even site. Parking is FREE. Photos are available for a fee from the photographer's website. The finisher's medal is a little cheesy, but the tee shirt is good, and I don't begrudge the savings if it goes to their orphanage charity. We ran here last year too, and will probably do so again next year.

All in all, if you're a competitive OCR racer, this might not be your type of run, but it should be fun for just about anyone else.
