Distance & Course Length:
Organizer:Survival Run Taking place three days before the 50km & 100km Fuego Y Agua Ultramarathon races, the Survival Run Nicaragua course is about 75km long, maybe longer. The obstacles (challenges) are setup to make this course a pass or fail. This course contains some of the most challenging obstacles ever seen in an obstacle course event. You will not be scaling walls or doing burpees, you may be doing things you have never done before! Along with several ascents and descents of one or both Volcanoes, you will be challenged with climbing, swimming lakes & jungle rivers, carrying all sorts of things, digging, running brutal terrain, throwing (maybe throwing up), memorizing, and overall surviving this epic event! Obstacles will not be revealed until race day; be ready for anything!

Bow-drill fire kit
""The Herbal Medic"" field guide
An atlatl and atlatl dart
A primitive bow and arrow(s)
A figure-4 snare
In addition to the obstacle course, integration of primitive survival skills will make this race unique. Here is what is covered in the 2-day training camp:
Aside from the race-competitors who will be attending, this weekend training camp will be open to anyone and everyone who is interested in training the hunter gatherer skills as well as the endurance, natural obstacle and problem solving skills.
There will be a multitude of hunter-gatherer skills covered, all of which could potentially be a part of the October (full) race. The skills we will learn and practice include:
Friction fire making (bow drill)
Knife care and use
Survival bow making/arrow fletching (pre-prepared arrow wood), intuitive shooting
Atlatl making and throwing
Knots and rope-work
Medicinal and edible plant identification & use
Edible insects & gathering
Sandal & primitive footwear making
Primitive containers and water purification/boiling
Yes, we will have stations and staff. Because of the nature of this training camp, we have Wilderness First Aid Responder certified instructors on hand throughout the camp and race. Participants are responsible for their own nutrition throughout the camp.
Spectators are welcome and they may walk the grounds during the trial race on 8/4.
This training camp is coordinated with survival race organizer Fuego y Agua (http://fuegoyagua.org/). The full hunter gatherer survival race will be after this preparatory training camp in Rocksprings in October and then Nicaragua in February.
This race is different than most mud races because it integrates use of survival skills into an obstacle course and timed event under challenging conditions.
