Gretna Gritty obstacle races, mud run, and OCR information, distance, cost, dates, calendar, discounts, obstacles, reviews, and more

This event is a 5k mud run with 15 obstacles set in the beautiful rugged terrain of Gretna Glen. Participants can expect to encounter mud, water, fire, rocks, earth, and climbs that excite the mud runner in us all! Our 5k Walk-A-Thon is at 10:00 in between the competitive and non competitive heats – where walkers can walk beside the Gritty and check out the fun. NEW this year, is a kids run – ‘the Nitty Gritty'which gets kids (5-11 years old) in on the action with a 1 mile fun run and leaves them with a sweet headband to celebrate their accomplishment. All runners, and walkers can expect lunch or breakfast (depending on your time of run), a t-shirt, and memories to last a lifetime.

Our Goal:

Have an AMAZING event with the BEST course around & Raise $75,000 for Gretna Glen's ‘Pathways to the Future' finance initiative. All proceeds for this event, excluding the costs of participation, will go directly toward Gretna Glen Camp & Retreat Center's ‘Pathway to the Future' Initiative. We seek to cast off our burden of debt so that camp can continue free of financial struggle, transforming lives for many years to come. Our goal this year is to have at least 600 runners and raise more than $75,000! With your help, we can make this come true.

I had a blast running this course. The volunteers and organizers were all incredible.

Parking was a breeze. I ran the earliest competitive heat so was permitted to park onsite. Once that parking filled up, they ran a shuttle to and from other lots. From what I could see, it went smoothly.

Registration took about 2 seconds (granted I was early, but) it looked as if they were prepared for the crowds!

I warmed up and headed over to the start area. The MC (Michael I think was his name? Could be totally wrong) got us all pumped and explained the rules of the course very well. We took off and around our first turn got blasted with those little plastic balls you find in ball pits by the spectators. I thought this was the nicest touch. Got me laughing as we started the race.

The volunteers were so nice and organized! Each one that I passed would yell something like "girl power" or "you go girl" or tell me how many people were in front of me.

They were prepared at the water stations and were there to give advice and encouragement at each obstacle.

The obstacles themselves were not the toughest, but fun nonetheless. My favorites were the pitch black tunnel crawl and the rope swing across the river. They relied a lot on the natural terrain, as we scaled boulders, hurdled over trees, and ran through creeks. Don't get me wrong, I loved it! But I would have liked to have been a bit more challenged. I'm sure that this is not the case for everyone! And I may sound a little cocky when I say it, but just my opinion from the competitive heat.

There were mile markers at each half mile which I really appreciated! It's amazing how many races don't mark the distance. I had my watch and was able to pace myself through the race.

Showers and changing tent were great to have (men's and women's). Lunch was provided afterwards and was great! Free with registration. There was a vegetarian and vegan option which I really appreciate!

I'll be back next year!

Advice to organizers- advertise the start area a bit more. I left my bag in the car because I didn't know there was going to be changing tents and showers over there. It's a little out of the way and I haven't been to the venue before (though I will be back next year).
Photographers! I know it might be difficult to splurge, but even having a photographer at just one or two obstacle could be so good for marketing. I posted my picture from the awards ceremony, but would have loved to have one of myself doing the tarzan swing or coming over the walls.
Regarding the awards ceremony, try to make it a bit more of thing. Waiting around in the cold and rain was miserable and I wish we could have gotten some stumps for podiums and a group picture at least! But, I do love my golden hatchet and I've been carrying it around with me since Saturday.
