The SISU IRON is an epic 30+ hour variety endurance event that should strike fear in your heart. It’s reputation is that it will challenge you in ways that you haven’t been challenged before, and there is no way for you to predict what the key challenges are. The organizer’s goal is to find the chink in the armor of even the strongest athletes.
If you’ve done an OCR in Southern California, chances are that you’ve seen the Weeple Army, the army of fun. Another team closely related to Weeple Army is The SISU Team, these racers enjoy hardcore events like the Spartan Hurricane Heats, GORUCKs, Death Race and Agoge. Over the past few years, I’ve gotten to know some of them and always heard about one of their signature events, the IRON. This year, I’m attempting my first IRON. So what is this event and why do people do it?
What do cinder blocks, air soft rifles, a Robert Frost poem, a disgusting, smelly pond, donuts on a string, a waterfall, wood chopping, a brutal & unconventional core workout, community service, and Dave & Busters have in common? All played vital roles in the 2015 SISU Iron: a world-class 30h endurance challenge in the hills of Monrovia, CA.
