Mini Monkey

Sep 30, 2017 by Brittany Spry

I have run a few mud runs in the past and they were fantastic. My daughter wanted to race, so I found this one and she was beyond excited to do a run with obstacles and mud. There was not one mud obstacle. In total, I paid about $40 for my daughter to do obstacles she has at her favorite playground- which is free. I am bummed for my daughter since she ended the race and asked where the mud was, and I felt terrible since I had told her there should be mud, from seeing the advirtisements. Something needs to change here. I do not recommend paying for this race that is misleading from the site and advirtisements.

Great race

This race was great! The obstacles were fun and challenging. People said that their obstacles weren't stable, but every obstacle was in place and fully functional in our race and we were in a late wave- 1:15pm. Everyone was helpful. The race was fun and not incredibly competitive, people helped if you needed it on an obstacle. It was organized, well run and had great freebies from sponsors. We would definitely do another race with Terrain.

Loved it!

I raced the elite heat and loved it! The obstacles were fun and challenging and loved the mandatory obstacle completion for the elites. I don't really understand the negative reviews. Perhaps those people have never shelled out $200 for a Spartan. Terrain offers a budget-friendly OCR option that is professionally run and well organized. Many of the races are absurdly expensive so I will gladly continue supporting and attending Terrain Races, where the prize money rivals the other races and the entry is a fraction of the cost.

Elite Racers... Don't even bother. Not my first OCR and upon arriving, the disorganization was obvious. You have to wait in yet another line and physically sign waivers even though they sent emails prior to the race to electronically sign -- What was the point, then? There was music but no DJ, extremely limited sponsors and food vendors, not really a hyped up 'party' atmosphere so there was little desire to hang out before/after your race, the changing tents were tiny and NOT secure whatsoever (entrance flaps completely open with no way to securely close them) and were located at the entrance of the event so everyone can see both men, women, and children changing! That is unacceptable. The race itself was not very good. You start in a pool of water (which reeked of urine by the way) and the obstacles weren't too challenging, with some being repeated multiple times along the course. Good luck having your picture taken, too. I counted TWO photographers the entire course. The volunteers were sparse and there were many unmanned obstacles. No verification for bag retrieval, t-shirts, and race type. Basic and cheap white race t-shirt.

All in all, save your money and go for a more reputable and organized OCR.

Look Out Below...

This was my first OCR run, so I'm not basing it off expectations of previous races. Overall, I had a good time. Starting in a pool of water seemed very strange as it's not an obstacle and in Arizona, you dry off extremely fast before you actually get to the first real one. The name says it all, we ran through desert brush and dry washes full of sand, so you really do need to "conquer your terrain." My biggest issues that give it a 3 star review is repeat obstacles, 2 7ft walls to ascend and one 4ft one to jump over. Just pick a size, and do it once, and give us 2 different obstacles in place of the repeaters. Also, doing the inclined monkey bars over a pool of water, was unknowingly treacherous. My fiance slipped and fell in, and landed on the ladder used to get out of the pool! It wasn't bolted down to the side and no volunteers were there to see and fix the problem. Everything else was fine, but safety incompetence isn't good. Will likely do it again next year, and will definitely check the pool next time to make sure we can't get hurt by a loose ladder.

DIsappointing

May 15, 2017 by Liz S

I only saw 2 photographers on the course, at the finishline and at the end for monkey bars, very disappointing. Few volunteers, many obstacles unmanned. Hoses were not hooked up (we ran the 1 pm) at the end to rinse off. No sanitizer in the porta potties.

First and last time. Poorly organized. One of those races where the organizers are looking to minimize their overhead and maximize profits. Obstacles were few and far between. They definately don't look to improve or add to their races.I paid extra for the 10K and no one checked to verify the others. Same medal for the 10K & 5K, cheap white tshirts with a generic logo that can be used in future races, same with the medals. I've run several other races and this was my worse experience.

FIND ANOTHER RACE!!

May 06, 2017 by Kressa Peterson

Wish I could leave zero stars. The cargo net obstacle started falling down in Miami and they had to remove people from it and disallow the obstacle. Not one person ever checked bands to see if the competitive athletes actually finished the obstacles. AND my husband paid for the competitive wave and Terrain has YET to post the times for the competitive wave in Miami. We had signed up for Atlanta and I have tried to contact them multiple times with no answer so I have disputed the charges with our bank. Terrain is dangerous, disorganized, irresponsible and to top it off they have zero customer service. Never again. That fact that they are a qualifying race for OCRWC is truly sad.

Garbage! So many fees and customer support is THE WORST!!!!

Mar 27, 2017 by Chad Mills

I signed up for this race months in advance and honestly I didn't have high expectations after reading some of the previous reviews about it but I wanted to find out for myself (kinda like movie reviews, never believe them unless you see it) So figured why not it was inexpensive and lets see what they are all about. So I entered the elite wave or competitive however you want to title it as I do every OCR. To my pleasingly surprise this was nothing like a movie critics review who said oh this is not great blah blah blah. So what I'm saying is this race was one of the best kept secrets for those who have not run it. I have run Spartans, Conquer the Gauntlets, Green Beret Challenge, and the list goes on and this race was on par if not better then some of the others. I would compare it to if you took Conquer the Gauntlet and The Warrior Dash and collided them. It had a good amount of strength to endurance ratio mixed in. There were monitors at every obstacle to make sure people did not cheat and actually completed them. Water stations were manned and had plenty of water available. The trails were marked perfectly so there was no confusion where to run. The whole venue was set up great. It was one of the most organized races I have done. If your one of those folks who likes boring starts, boring obstacles, no mud, or staying wet the entire race then join your typical movie critic and live your average life on the other hand if you want an exciting challenging competitive race that does not break your piggy bank to sign up all the way to the day of the race. Jump on the best kept secret in the OCR world!!!!!
