Results not posted, very unprofessional

Nov 12, 2018 by Dustin

Beware! Over 3 months have passed and they have still not posted results for the Flagstaff race. I have contacted them numerous times and they will not post the results or issue any kind of refund. They also blocked my comments on Facebook. Would NOT recommend.

Horrible organization. I regretfully had to cancel Phx on 10/27/18 due to an injury. I followed their policy, submitted through the website FIVE times starting 4 days before the event and 2 days before the deadline to notify. No confirmation or replies to ANY of my submissions. The link to email them if the form submission wasn't replied to in 2 business days was a dead end. I wanted to sign up for the April Tucson event while it was free and transfer my payment. NO ANSWER. So I ended up paying for the Tucson event (even though they advertise for free, there are costs). There are no phone numbers on the website. Finally a phone number on my bank card statement! Alas, still not the right people. Was given an email address. For a week, I've emailed with Pamela (the Manager I was told) who avoids my request for one of these races to be refunded since I would not have signed up for Tucson if they had answered my emails to transfer the payment. I am told flat out no refunds. No gesture whatsoever in taking responsibility for not replying to me. Not even an apology.

I wish I had read these reviews before ever getting started with this organization. From what it sounds like, they are spiraling toward their own demise. Buyer beware. I'm filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

I have run many races and this was one of the worst. It was very unorganized. We had to pay for parking and also pay to have items checked it. Iver never had to pay to check bags before. It took an hour to get signed in because there was only 3 people running those tables. There was only one water station. No fee snacks, beer or water after the race. We had to pay if we wanted it and not that many options. No photo takers anywhere along the course. Every race over ever run there is at least a photographer at the finish line. There was nothing except the race it’s self. The race was fine, nice course and lots of obstacles. I thought there would be lots of mud, but hardly any. For the amount we paid for this, it wasn’t worth it. Will not do this again.

This race was held yesterday11/3/18, not 11/10/18. We did this race last year and loved it. While we still had fun this year, we noticed there weren’t as many obstacles, there wasn’t a bathroom break half way theough and there was only 1 water station throughout the whole course. Also they ask your t-shirt size while registering but still didn’t have the correct t-shirt size after the race (2XL.- for my fiancé). I would also like to see more music throughout the course. Hopefully next year they will take all of these reviews and improve the race!

Horrible

Oct 03, 2018 by Vanessa

Horrible race. We did last years and liked it. This year they had half the obstacles. Understaffed. Poorly managed. So disappointing especially after the price. Had a $20.00 deal but then plus insurance and a "processing" fee per person not per transaction turned out to $40.00 a ticket. Plus $10.00 to park. So not worth it.

Understaffed

Oct 01, 2018 by Matt

This was my first Terrain Race experience, and from the website and lower entry fees I didn't expect as much as I would from a Spartan Race for example. I was however really disappointed in the lack of staff on the course. It was very challenging to stay on the course as it was very poorly marked. I had not done a Terrain race before, and so I was not sure how to do some of the obstacles, of which many had nobody there to explain. Not having a non-completion penalty is also frustrating when the obstacles are wet and muddy. I would be curious to see how many people actually completed the tarzan rope obstacle. It was a fun day for a good workout, but I would not consider calling this a serious race experience at all.

Worst race I've ever run

Oct 01, 2018 by Jordan

This was absolutely the worst obstacle race I have ever participated in. The traffic management was almost nonexistent, with only a single person taking money for all incoming vehicles. This caused a ~30 minute line of cars for parking.

The check-in tables were covered, but the spot where waivers were to be signed and taken to the check in tents was not, which was a very big problem given that it was a rainy day- all forms were soaked, and there was only one working pen at the entire table.

The bag check-in had a $5 cash only fee, which was not advertised through the registration process or reminder emails.

There was almost nothing to do pre-race. There was one barbecue truck selling food, but it was very very far from the start line. The only tents set up were selling either selling Terrain Run merch or life insurance (either All-State or Farmer's, I think?)

The trail itself was entirely saturated and covered in mud, as it has been raining very frequently leading up to the event, and the day of the event. The trail was to the point where you could not run for 80% of it without rolling an ankle. In my opinion, the run should have been called for rain and rescheduled.

The obstacles were all very, very poorly managed, and ~1/4 of them were entire not doable as a result of the rainy conditions. Ever try climbing a knotless rope that is entirely covered with slick, wet mud? Or getting a toe hold on a climbing wall that's caked with still wet mud? Of the obstacles that were able to be done, there was very little volunteer management or turnout, leading to almost no direction at the obstacles.

After finishing, we learned the water tank had run entirely dry (and we were on the 10:00 wave, so other waves were still starting as we finished). Medals were given, but there was no fruit, no food, just cheap plastic cups of tepid water.

As mentioned before, there was no after party. The changing tent was very small and cramped, though almost entirely unused as there was no water for rinsing off the mud.

I have attended many obstacle races over the last five years, and this was by far the absolute worst. I will never run another race managed by this group.

Poor planning

Sep 30, 2018 by Tosha

Poorly organized. I’ve done several races this was by far the worst. It was so muddy you could barely run. Obstacles where in poor shape. They ran out of water for rinse off, course went in circle, trouble staying on course, 3 lines to check in. No one even checked your voucher or start time. Heats just went whenever. No vendors. Some food. Kids run was ok. Maybe 3 good obstacles. I won’t do it again.

Very Disappointing

Sep 30, 2018 by Chrissy Brown

This years race compared to the past years was an utter disappointment. There were a lack of obstacles, one mud obstacle and one water obstacle. There was a lack of volunteers and instructions at each obstacle. There was only one option a 5k and I’m not sure it was a true 5k there was no pool at the beginning of the race, no beer at the end of the race and not much of a celebration or after party. There were fewer than 15 obstacles and the obstacles were very lack luster. This race has completely changed and is a joke, not an obstacle course at all! Either bring back the original terrain race with all the obstacles or call this a different race because this is definitely not a terrain race.

Cheap obstacle race for beginners

Sep 29, 2018 by JC

Terrain Race is great for beginners for the price. We only paid $20 which is a lot less than Spartan. However, you do get what you paid for. There aren't a lot of obstacles and most of them are fairly easy. Tarzan is the only one that's on the difficult side. There is only one mud obstacle so you can stay fairly dry and clean if you skip that one and if you don't fall off the monkey bar. Most of the competitors are beginners or kids / teenagers so a few obstacles have a long waiting line. A lot of the obstacles do not have a guide to you when it begins / ends so it can get confusing.

The t-shirt quality is poor and not soft like Spartan or Rugged Maniac. The metal is cool though. There are no sponsors or much activities after the race. There is no free sports drink or snack or fruits after the race. You only get t-shirt and metal.
Overall, there weren't that many people at all. Definitely a lack of energy and excitement compared to Spartan and Rugged Maniac.

For the price, it's a fine race for beginners to try out.
