Race Recap – May 18th KC Timber Challenge Race preview

I got the privilege to check the new, first time, KC Timber Challenge OCR in Bonner Springs, KS this past Saturday. This is the first OCR that I have seen that is literally STRAIGHT UP NATURAL- NATURALLY TOUGH!! It’s on 130 wooded acres along the banks of the Kansas River. It’s definitely a one of a kind natural course with unique terrain and landscape. I’m talking huge fallen trees you’re jumping over and crawling under, sliding down ten foot banks into creek beds, mud pits, hurdling fire logs, boulders and rock bluffs, just to name a few. Some of the man-made obstacles are their 300 foot hand held zip lines over a muddy water hole, swimming through the Icy Shriveler, and a 40,000 cricket cage crawl. Is that crazy enough for you??

Race Recap: Tough Mudder Kansas

I always have a blast and look forward to what Tough Mudder is going to bring to the table. I was scheduled to go off in the first heat at 10 AM on Saturday and the weather was perfect. I arrived there between 8-8:15am and it’s always exciting to see people already waiting in line to get their bib # and getting fired up!! Parking was well marked and all the volunteers were in their places and racers were checking in smoothly.

Race Recap: Fort Gordon Marine Mud Challenge

This past Saturday I must say I was practically spoiled: there was FINALLY a local obstacle race to go! No waking up at 4 am to hit the road toward Atlanta or Columbia, no need to drive 3 hours the night before to stay in a cheap hotel before a race, racking up a pretty penny for the weekend when it’s all said and done. The Fort Gordon Marine Mud Challenge took place right here in my backyard of Augusta, GA, right smack dab in the middle of the namesake Army Post.

Race Recap: Spartan Colorado Military Sprint

Ah Colorado. This was the 3rd year that spartan has done the military sprint at Fort Carson Army base. For those of you who would like a challenge with the spartan sprints, seriously look at this race. The obstacles are dense. In 4.5 miles we completed 25 obstacles. Sometimes back to back, and at the finish there are spear, Hercules hoist, dunk wall mud climb,slippery wall, horizontal cargo net bridge, fire jump and gauntlet.

Race Recap: Muckfest MS – Boston, MA

I am just an average Joe. I can run 3 miles on a good day. I don’t lift weights, use the machines at the gym or otherwise train seriously. But I love a challenge and fell in love with OCR immediately. My philosophy is: I may not be the best runner, but I WILL do all the obstacles.
Muckfest was a fun course, but it rained ALL DAY.

Race Recap: Tough Mudder GA 2014

We were lucky again to have the legion himself Sean Covelle to do our start. Sean did a great job as always motivating the crowd. The start speak is a little heavy on the Mudder Legion stuff, but still great. I was standing at the back of the starting area when Sean asked for the 10+ Legionnaires to stand, all 3 of us stood up, me at the back and the other 2 right up front. Sean asked me to crowd surf to the front and do the countdown. Which of course I did with a huge smile on my face, a quick countdown from 10 and we were off.

OCR WARRIOR: First-Ever Mud Run Reality Show

May 2, 2014, Phoenix, AZ - Competitors will clash this Friday night in a head-to-head challenge on the grounds of Wild Horse Pass Casino in Phoenix, AZ on a specially designed 1 mile obstacle course - complete with walls, mud, barbed wire, cargo nets, and even fire - competing for cash, prizes, & fame. Each battle will be captured live by over 30 high definition cameras on the course, and even by a custom drone in the air above the racers to provide a birds-eye view of all the action. Only the strongest and fastest male and female will crush their foes to be crowned OCR Warrior.

IORF: Spartan Race Taps Adventure Racing Pro for Top Spot

The IORF has been launched by Spartan Race in consultation with a number of industry leaders to address these concerns, establishing unified rules of competition, safety protocols and admission processes for member organizations meeting the IORF’s standards of excellence. In addition to enhancing safety and quality control standards across the obstacle racing industry, the IORF intends to focus on member benefits both at races and beyond, including establishing an international ranking system. Upon achieving certain operational milestones and 501(c)(3) (non-profit) status, which it is currently working towards, the IORF will operate independently. The Federation’s website is currently soliciting interest from prospective judges, officials, athletes and others within the space and will more fully launch later in the year.

Well, if one of the 3 groups fighting for different forms of sanctioning have their way, there will be at least one branch of OCR (or OR) that will strictly adhere to a rule book with hundreds of pages of guidelines about every bit of minutiae that could possibly affect an athlete's time on the course.
