For three years and counting, the Big Bear Beast and Sprint has been known for its soul-crushing hills, bone-chilling climate and as an overall ball-buster of an experience. What happens when you add snow and ice?
Last weekend, Spartan kicked off the season with two races in Chino. Here's one MRG Crewmember's take on the SoCal Sprint.
While the season may be over for some, and others are busy preparing for World's Toughest Mudder, for the few thousand of us who strolled into Lake Elsinore last Sunday, we came ready to kick ass.
Spartan Race launched its brand new venue and welcomed thousands of eager racers to test out the dusty unmarred course in the spanking new location of Tejon Ranch, California. While many people were initially unsure of what to expect, us native Californians knew without hesitation that it would be warm, it would be dry and it would be painful in all the best ways.
Obstacle Course Racing has been one of the most exhilarating new fitness trends of the twenty-first century; making headlines in not just North America, but globally. Nearly 80% of adults 18-25 are familiar with the craze, and even my grandparents are coloring themselves intrigued. Noticeably, Crossfit gyms and boot camps are expanding their services to offer OCR training and profit off this new fitness craze.
This year, Gladiator Rock n' Run Race decided it was time to evolve with the future, so the company vocalized their intrigue in organizing a stadium run. Spartan was the first to introduce it in 2012, and now many of the leading obstacle course racing brands are becoming fascinated with the idea of racing in their favorite arenas and ballparks.
I had the pleasure of experiencing the inaugural Grit OCR event in beautiful Santa Clarita, California. Previously Grit OCR was planning to develop an OCR fitness center, however after participating in the spectacular SPACEROCK Trail Race organized by New Global Adventures, an organization that specializes in trail running and endurance event including the VALENCIA Trail Race and Silver Moon Race.
The great thing about OCR is that there is an abundance of dedicated runners (and walkers!) who have come together because of a struggle. I can't even begin to guess how many thousands of people have transformed their bodies, minds, and souls because of these events. I'm not just talking about weight loss and muscle gain, but amazing people who have overcome drugs addictions, alcohol dependencies, bulimia, anorexia, cancer, and other major health concerns.
I'll admit it: I had heard from a friend that Epic Series was an easy beginner race, so I was prepared to deal with an unorganized chaotic mess, as often times the new or beginner race companies are still learning the tricks of the trade. But as I embarked on my very first Epic Series Race this past Saturday, I was pleased to see that I was wrong. Epic Race was truly EPIC in deliverance.
