Product Review: Compex Electrical Muscle Stimulators (EMS)

By |April 19th, 2018|

There is a saying that I like when it comes to fitness, “if you want something you never had, you have to be willing to do something you have never done.” Normally this comes in the form of more training, harder training or a better diet. The question is if you already feel like you are putting in extra effort in those categories, what else can you do? The answer may be Compex Electrical Muscle Stimulators (EMS).

Shoe Review: Xero Shoes Prio

By |April 5th, 2018|

The test pair of Xero Shoes Prio arrived a few hours before I flew out to compete in the Bermuda Triple Challenge, so I did what any logical person would do; unpacked my other "race" shoes and decided Xero Shoes were the only ones I'd bring on vacation for 10 days, compete in 3 races, and even cliff-jumping. Did these lightweight, flexible, zero-drop minimalist shoes have it in them to hold up to Bermuda Triple Challenge?

Product Review: Merrell Trail (OCR) Shoe Line

By |March 8th, 2018|

Earlier this year I got to test all four different models of Merrell’s trail running shoe line. I’m pretty picky about my shoes so as usual, I was skeptical. When I shop for an Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) shoes I typically look in the trail running section but look for a couple of specific features including things like weight, ability to drain water, traction and fit.

Review: Stoked Coffee Stix – Bring the Stoke With You

By |February 15th, 2018|

As editor-in-chief of Mud Run Guide, there is one substance above all that fuels me. Simply, coffee. The coffee routine at my house involves weighing and hand grinding freshly roasted beans, warming my mug and pour over set with one set of water. At the same time heating another kettle to an exact temperature before meditatively pouring over the beans.  Simply, it is my morning moving meditation.

Product Review: Frogskins Top and Bottom

By |February 8th, 2018|

“I love Frogskins.” “You need a pair of Frogskins.”  “Obviously you own a pair of Frogskins right?”  All of these statements have been said to me in the past year.  So I finally relented and decided to test out a pair of the Australian based Frogskins designed by Probe Wetsuits since my friends would not stop mentioning them in conversations having to do with Ultra-Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) like Toughest Mudder, World’s Toughest Mudder and Spartan’s Ultra-Beast.

Gear Review – LifeBEAM Vi A.I. Fitness Tracker Headphones

By |February 1st, 2018|

GPS and heart rate tracking technology has been dropping in price (and size) every year.  The Vi fitness tracker headphones aim to take this fitness tracking technology seen in many popular watches from companies like Garmin and Suunto, shrink it into a pair of headphones, and add some artificial intelligence to go along with it for good measure. LifeBEAM, the company behind the Vi headphones, provided us with a set of headphones for review.

Product Review – Barstarzz Beast on the Bars: Part I

By |January 4th, 2018|

As my OCR friend James Grbac said, the muscle up is the holy grail of moves. I’ve been going for it since last year. There are lots of YouTubes on how to do it. I’ve tried everything. My definition of success looks like this: starting from a dead hang, complete a full muscle up in one fluid motion without a kip. I want the hardest one. Then I will know I can do the easier ones. In fact, I can already do a six-foot wall or bar muscle up just by jumping a bit.
