So I did a thing this past weekend. It involved vacuuming, carrying heavy stuff and honoring a hero. Do you know what I did? If you said a GORUCK Light you are correct!! I am all for trying out new things so I thought I would step out of my comfort zone and give it a go.
It was St Patty’s Day with the holiday an enthusiastic crowd gathered at Terrain Race. Many participants sported costumes in honor of the holiday, something that you don’t see as much of anymore. There were also lots of volunteers at registration and in the festival area, which is always a good sign. And of course, there was music! Whatever else a race does, the music makes the atmosphere.

This 12 hour Hurricane Heat (HH12HR) was the first invitational, unofficial World Championship, as well as Kyoul Cha's last event. The hype going into this event was big, because of all the talks of big names coming to compete in this World Championship. As a result, the Krypteia had big plans to make this one of the hardest and most inspiring of the HH12HR's.
No one should have a pre-5am start on a Sunday, but it was The Nuts Challenge weekend! I was signed up to race the four-lap challenge, and this being my first time racing at the ‘UK’s Toughest OCR’, I wasn’t sure what to expect.
For anyone who thought they would be running near the strip in Las Vegas for the recent Spartan Race, they were sadly mistaken as the course actually ran 90 miles away from the strip in the Arizona desert. While the race itself was great, Spartan dropped the ball on a few elements this year.

I was excited to be back out there finally and looking forward to another race at Amelia Earhart Park, which now seems to be the go-to venue here in Miami. Initially my thoughts went to the opportunity of being able to compare race promoters on an even scale. What kind of race could they put on using the same exact terrain as other promoters? That doesn’t happen very often in OCR. However, it was clear from the beginning that Spartan Race wasn’t just playing against the rest of the OCR field, they were upping their game from their last visit here.
Jedi Markowski got on my radar about two years ago while he was at Pinnacle Parkour in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Since then, that gym successfully spawned three additional locations. That helped launch him onto the national scene as a contestant on American Ninja Warrior. In his “free” time, he volunteers at the Goliathon, where I picked him up again last October. This past weekend, he started his own gig, the Obstacle Training Academy: a Mobile Ninja/OCR Experience.
With an exciting 3.5 miles of trails, mud, water and 26 obstacles, the inaugural Vanguard Race kicked off the 2018 Louisiana obstacle course racing season in Hammond, Louisiana on February 17th.
