Getting to the XX RACE at iMETTLE is just two turns off I-76 in King of Prussia, PA. Finding it is as easy as following your nose. A huge bakery fronts the shared building. For some unknown reason, I chose to follow the alluring scent up front instead of the three guys running towards the back where iMETTLE resides.

About five years ago Mike Vaules and two of his colleagues attended a benefit gala for the Navy SEAL Foundation. There they met the 31 Heroes Project leaders who wanted another highly visible and fun event to raise funds. The three men, all residents of Ocean City, New Jersey, provided the obvious choice. In obstacle course racing there are always those big races we all hear about but once in a while, there comes along a small local race that does it just right and can compete against some of the bigger names. One of those is Eagles Nest Training, in Smith Falls, Ontario – Canada.
A lone sentinel stands guard over the sole surviving bastion of full-time OCR in the southern half of New Jersey. ABF Mud Run is a shell of its former self. Some moved to Texas. Others like myself are still out there rucking from place to place looking for a home base. Some moved to South Jersey OCR.
It took a great amount of courage for me to approach Coach Pain for a sit-down chat. I had met him at BattleFrog in Squamish, B.C. but wasn’t sure if he would be willing to share with me how he developed his passion, his strength and what makes him Coach Payne.
