The obstacle racing season is starting to kick it back into high gear with many of the high profile series beginning their seasons as we round out the month of January. Mud Run Guide has members of our team traveling around the country and world to cover many of these races. The highlights of the coming weekend are Spartan Race kicking off their season outside Temecula, California, BattleFrog Series with their second race of the season outside Phoenix, Arizona.
Recently, I was peripherally involved in an article that helped open my eyes in a number of ways. It was an article that raised questions about safety at BattleFrog Series, a relative newcomer to the world of OCR with grand ambitions, who wants to position itself as one of the big players in the market space.
The 2016 OCR Season has arrived, and BattleFrog kicked off the year with it's long awaited debut on the West Coast. Not only was this BattleFrog's first event on the West Coast, but it was also the first time that Pro Athlete Ryan Atkins took on the role of course designer. Many in OCR are often claimed that the finishes are not very exciting and often times minutes separate athletes. However, over the past weekend, BattleFrog Series disproved the notion with a photo-finish for second place between Ian Hosek and Glenn Racz.
New Years Day marked the first time in obstacle racing history a race company in the OCR industry sponsored a college football game. The Fiesta Bowl was now the BattleFrog Fiesta bowl. Many people in the general sporting world had their first taste of the sport through the advertisements, on-site mini course, and of course, internet searches during commercial breaks.
Last week BattleFrog Series on the heels of their championships announced for 2016 they would offer a variety of multi-race and season pass options for competitors at all levels. The season pass allows loyal BattleFrog athletes the chance to get the most of their race experience.
I love a challenging course!! I was fortunate to have an opportunity to go on a course preview Friday evening before the race with Mud Run Guide. Normally, I like to run a race without having much more than an idea how long the course is certainly not the detailed location of obstacles! But when you have a chance to do something like this at a championship...you do it. I was fairly confident I'd forget most of it once I got out on course Saturday and I was right.
