Get ready to unleash the Beast! 10 miles, 30 obstacles, 1 goal: the mantra of the Barber Beast on the Bay, a one-of-a-kind obstacle course race that combines natural and manmade obstacles at top voted location in Pennsylvania!

The seventh annual Barber Beast on the Bay is set for Saturday, September 7, 2019, at Presque Isle State Park (USA Today’s ‘Best Pennsylvania Attraction’) in Erie, PA. Participants will take on 10 miles of sand, water, and trails – it’s the nature of the Beast! Be ready to run, jump, climb and crawl across more than 30 obstacles on the shores of Lake Erie. And while you tackle your challenges during the Beast, you’ll also be helping the children and adults with autism, intellectual disabilities and behavioral health challenges at the Barber National Institute who take on their own obstacles on a daily basis, as the event supports the non-profit and its 6,200 individuals.

A one-mile adapted course will also be offered for those ages 12+ with physical or intellectual disabilities at Waldameer Park and Water World, a theme park in Erie, PA next to Presque Isle State park. The 10 Mile Course and Adapted Course come together at the end as one and all participants cross the finish line together!

And, yes, we love all eyes on us – spectators are encouraged to cheer participants along the Beast’s 10 Mile Course and Adapted Course. All are welcome at the finish for our post-race festivities including music, dancing, food trucks and ice cold beer!

This year I completed the Beast, I have also been a volunteer for previous races. The Barber National Institute is a wonderful cause to compete for, and the signs and cheering sections along the route remind you of all the wonderful things the institute does. There is a wide mix of terrain- sand, pavement, trail, swamp, lake. The obstacles are moderate in difficulty ranging from very easy to somewhat difficult depending on fitness level. Overall a fun and rewarding experience for a day at the beach.

It's okay. For a good cause, though.

The obstacles are just okay, and people who are used to doing other obstacle course races might find them disappointing and unchallenging. The sandy terrain does help make it more interesting though, and the race does benefit a good cause. They also provide a special course for competitors with disabilities, which is also a nice plus.

If I were to rate it based on the obstacles alone, it would be middling. They do have other qualities that warrant a higher rating though, and the obstacle quality is a definite step up from last year. I can tell that they're trying to step up their game, and so I'm hoping that they'll provide even better challenges in the future -- the kinds that are likely to attract dedicated racers from far and wide.

I Beat the Beast for Mathew

Jan 27, 2017 by Kim Serafin

If you are looking for a fun, positive challenging experience on beautiful Lake Erie come join us Sept. 9th supporting a great cause. The Barber National Institute benefits so many children and adults including my son. I have completed the Beast on the Bay for the past 2 years and am already signed up this year with our team Miles for Mathew. It is a very feel good experience helping a great organization and accomplishing the 10 miles of obstacles. You are surrounded by lots of high energy and everyone in it together to complete the challenge. All levels of fitness welcome as you can tailor it to your abilities run or walk. Beautiful location in the woods, in the water and on the beach. Hope to see you Sept. 9th.

Very fun race. Offered some unique obstacles and the course made great use of the park's varying terrain types. One minute you're running on the beach, the next you're mucking through a swamp. The cheerleading groups at obstacles made for a fun atmosphere. We have already signed up for 2017!

Great OCR Event

Jan 26, 2017 by Matthew Cramer

This is a great event for a great cause. If you're in the Cleveland, Buffalo or Pittsburgh area, it's only a short drive to experience the beauty of Presque Isle State Park. You get to run on pavement, trails and sand and there are plenty of obstacles to keep you entertained and challenged. This is a nice little tune up at the end of the season before OCRWC.

This was my first time at age 67 and it was a great challenge and I beat the Beast! The obstacles were difficult but what a rush to finish and see all the support with all the participants. For all the challenges people with disabilities face, this is just a small way to show support..

I beat the beast! You can too!

I have participated in the Beast the past 3 years. Whether you want to do it alone, or with a group: the Beast is the race for you. It's a great area, awesome volunteers, and overall great time. You're in the sand, on trails, in the lake, on pavement, and yes... in the swamp! You run, crawl, climb, swim, and jump your way to an awesome finish. And the medals are fabulous! It supports a great organization and the cost is very reasonable! I am hooked and I will keep coming back for many years. Go Power Beasts!

I AM A BEAST!

The Barber Beast on the Bay is one of the most beautiful, rewarding, and fun races I have ever run. There are options for timed or untimed races. Great obstacles, very well organized, and a GREAT CAUSE! I plan on participating in this race every year! It seems to get better and better each year!

Wow! What a fantastic race! A real challenge for a great cause. The 6 miles of sand is tough, but you want to be a beast right?? Well planned, properly staffed, great design. All in all a real winner.
