What is Tough Mudder?

Tough Mudder is a team-oriented 10-12 mile (18-20 km) obstacle course consisting of mud and obstacles built to test your mental grit, camaraderie and all-around physical fitness. Tough Mudder puts camaraderie over finisher rankings and is not a race but a team challenge – no winner, no finisher medal, no clock to race against—just an ice cold beer and a few good scrapes from a day spent outside and free from everyday bullshit.

We are for anyone who has ever followed their gut, tried to defy gravity, chosen “dare” over “truth,” taken risks, sought thrills, or is generally awesome at life. Turns out, it’s all been training. We are Tough Mudder.

The Mudder Pledge

  • We understand that Tough Mudder is not a race but a challenge.
  • We put teamwork and camaraderie before our course time.
  • We do not whine – kids whine.
  • We help our fellow mudders complete the course.
  • We overcome all fears.

Here Are the Facts:

FACT #1 – It’s fun. Real fun.

Bring your friends. Bring your family members. Bring that dude in your office that always shows you photos of his cat. The more the merrier. Tough Mudder is not a race, it’s a teamwork-oriented challenge that puts camaraderie over course time.

FACT #3 – Finishing feels THAT good.

“Euphoria” is one word people often use to describe finishing. “Ecstasy” is another. Participating in a team event like Tough Mudder gets people in shape and out of their routines and comfort zones.

FACT #2 – You can do it. Seriously.

With the right amount of training and preparation, you can complete a Tough Mudder. At the start line all Mudders pledge to help their fellow Mudders complete the course and leave no Mudder behind. You are no exception to that rule.

FACT #4 – It gets you pumped up.

Once you sign up for a Tough Mudder, it’s time to start training. Tough Mudder isn’t just about event day, it’s about your entire Mudder journey–from the adrenaline rush of committing to the glory of that finish line beer.

The course was great (much better than last years spot). The obstacles were pretty good and the lines weren't that bad. Appreciated that they closed some roads to allow traffic and parking. HUGE disappointment goes to the bag check. It was non existent!! They had some guy there, but he couldn't have been bothered to check to make sure folks were taking their own bags. That is something that needs to change now! You can't charge for checked bags and not supply any type of security.

Other than that it was a good time.

Yes it is expensive but above all one of the best races out there. Very challenging and fun to run. Atlanta is very well organized.

I dislocated my knee on the course (I ran both days) , and the medical was kind enough to drive through Mudder village to get my headband.

Food does need to be cheaper. Parking shouldn't be $10. And no bad check fee. Also, need better spectator routs.

Only obstacle I hated was the beached wale. Very dangerous.

Fantastic once again

Apr 18, 2016 by Mcfly1982

I love this venue and I love what Tough Mudder has brought to the table the @ every event I have attended, This is the 3rd year that Tough Mudder comes to Glen Helen Raceway and it did not disappoint. I was lucky enough to be part of the Superhero wave that day, so my fellow superheroes and I, got 1st dibs at the course. Blockness monster was as good as advertised, Rain man freaked me the hell out, pyramid scheme got me out of my loner comfort zone and finally gave me a chance to team up, and help fellow mudders, and of course King of Swingers rocked the house as usual. They peppered us with 3 miles of hills to begin, then gave us a little breather witha couple of obstacles and then hitting us again w about 2 more miles worth of hills. Luckily, I have been working out losing weight and training so those same hills that kicked my ass last year, were vanquished with minimal pain. The last 3-4 miles were nothing but flat track and obstacles, that were spaced perfectly. The only swing and miss that I can think of was there frequent flyers club obstacle. Didn't really wow me, I was more impressed with fire in the hole and the water slide with flames from previous years. Volunteers were fantastic, I cannot wait to do it again 3 more times this year and yet again in 2017 @ Glen Helen. Oh and the winds made it even more epic. :)

Mixed reviews from a Legionaire

Apr 02, 2016 by Mat
Event Name: Multiple Tough Mudders

I've had a lot of good experiences at Tough Mudder(s) and a lot of not so good experiences. I find that of the seven Tough Mudders I've participated at, only one they checked the parking pass meaning I wasted $10 on parking numerous times.

One particular Tough Mudder I booked a cabin months in advance(which happened to be on the course), and noticed I would not be able to park on site, but wasn't emailed back at all until I emailed the camp site myself a couple weeks before the event to clarify that situation in which I was refunded the money but had to book a hotel last minute and paid extra.

As far as the event itself, I find that over the last four and a half years since my first Tough Mudder, the amount of obstacles has decreased significantly and Tough Mudder has garnered more towards kids by taking their focus away from providing a challenging course, and more on the kids with the "Fruit Mudder" and by lowering the age limit from 18 to 16.

The t-shirts went from being under armor (which is a significantly more comfortable shirt) for the first hand full of years to cotton in 2015. Although I've never had this problem myself yet (Knock on wood) I've heard countless Legionaires (Multiple time Tough Mudders) are being denied their Legionaire Headband that is promised on the website when completing a Tough Mudder.

(Also, it used to be a 12 mile course which is now a 10 mile course (even though they state its a 10-12 mile course, don't believe it. Its 10 and not 10-12)

The course map has never once been 100% perfect, and I don't expect it to be, but sometimes it wasn't even close. I also wish that the spectator route was more organized so the spectators could take more pictures.

The lines for some obstacles are ridiculously over a half hour wait just to go over some monkey bars.

Lastly for the cons, I have seen numerous reports on the news of how with the money raised by Tough Mudder being as much as it is, less than 60% actually goes to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Now to the pros- I find myself talking to and chatting up with complete strangers sometimes for miles at a time about just anything from where we come from to how many Tough Mudders we've done, to whats the next obstacle. There is never a shortage of mud, and the staff is almost always super friendly and super helpful. I always feel safe when running Tough Mudders. Despite there being more negative things listed than positive, in the end its still an enjoyable challenge- NOT A RACE, and I am proud to call myself a Tough Mudder Legionaire.

Our 1st OCR ever and we had a blast!!! The comraderie was outstanding!!! I couldn't have done it without the help of so many complete strangers. Loved every bit of it!!! Can't wait to do our next TM Missouri 2016!!! The cold beer at the end was THE BEST EVER (not sure if it was just THAT good or we worked our butts off and deserved it THAT much). LOL
My sense of pride, once finished, was, & still is, phenomenal!!! Still so proud!!!
The only negative about the event was the cost. Way too expensive but we loved it so much that we're doing it again!!!
You don't have to be in perfect shape to be a part of TM. Just try your hardest and keep on chugging!!!

Nov 16, 2015 by Ben

I would really give it 4.5 stars if I could, because one obstacle (beached whale) deflated and it didn't work. But overall the course was very challenging and very well organized. This is the best obstacle race for me because am less concerned with my time and more interested in camaraderie with others who are testing themselves physically. I especially enjoy the obstacles require teamwork or at least the help of one other individual. I like that everyone takes the Mudder pledge at the beginning that they will be more concerned with helping their fellow Mudder finish than their personal time. The best part of the event is helping someone else who is busting their butt to push themselves harder. Not as solitary as the Spartan Beast; not as physically taxing either. Even if you participate on your own, there are plenty of people who will help you out, and whom you can help in return. Wish there were a couple more weight-intensive lifting obstacles to burn your legs a bit more. Other than those few pecadillos, a great event.

Way too exspensive

Sep 01, 2015 by Dave Malarik

First off the TM I am reviewing was not even on the selection list. It was outside of Pittsburgh PA on Aug 30 2015. Liked the course. Managed ok. Second TM for me and first for my three kids that I registered. Wife came as a spectator. Add the $10 plus tax to park in a grass field and I was well over $600. If I would not have pre registered and signed up that weekend it would have topped $1000. My sons girl friend was not pre registered and it cost her over $40 to show up just to watch......that is just BS. The Tough Mudder is just outrageously over priced. All along I felt I was at least benefitting the Wounded Warrior program....after a little research the evening after the last event I found they contribute nothing to the WW program. Will never regret doing it because the experience will last a life time but with the same money I could take my family to the ocean for a three day weekend. Should not be long before the masses catch on participation drops. Maybe then the cost to participate will fall.

Not worth it - Long Island , NY 2015

The race itself was a great challenge with interesting obstacles, of the 100’s of races I have participated in this event seemed more of a cash grab for your money than anything else - $10 to check bag, $10 to park, $125+ to register, $20 to bring a spectator (plus on-line fees for all or double the price on day of) and you are not even given a bottle of water or food (only beef jerky and protein bar - is a banana or apple too much to ask) after the 2+ hour event! Only food was for sale but I have to admit it was reasonably priced as well as 1 free beer, for sales beer was also reasonable priced. No finishers medal, only a cotton finisher t-shirt with an orange headband and hand towel. The course was challenging for those who might have no experience with trail running. Some of the obstacles were interesting, but some were just piles of mud and not really challenging just dirty. One obstacle was to carry a fellow participant on your back for 25 yards then switch positions (seems a greater chance of injury). The event requires a lot of teamwork which can be difficult if you are alone. Most participants are teams of young millennials. (Great to see young people dismiss the prevailing ideas that they are out of shape and lazy). There was much media coverage of the dangers of this type of event, it seems to me the danger does not lie in the obstacles but in the participants. If you are not in shape for this or overzealous, you can get severely injured. Only saw one male on crutches after the event
Would I attend again, well the race was fun, but it seemed like money-grabbing for very little in return for your dollar. So I probably won't attend a Tough Mudder run event again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. Perhaps try an obstacle race organized by a different group. I have done Spartan Stadium Races, Warrior Dashes and Men’s Health Urbanathon.

Dissapointing

Just completed Yorkshire tough mudder at Broughton hall. This was our first time on a tough mudder course and maybe our last. Positives were the course was good and well laid out ( apart from one point where a herd of sheep decided to stampede the runners ) Negative points ( oh the negative points ) was water stations running out of cups and some unfriendly marshalls. These events are about pushing yourself and other's to be better. If you haven't got it in you to be positive, helpful and encouraging don't volunteer. Long waiting time 20 mins at some obstacles, again poor marshalling. Parking fees were £15 per car, bit excessive ( and tried to charge us twice ). Spectators £20 per person, considering they paid £15 to park and were going to spend money on food, drink etc etc little bit embarrassing to charge we thought. Maybe a nominal fee (£3-5) would be more appropriate. My two little boys are 7 and 5 and on the day the steward asked if they had ID? Oh and apparently my service photo card isn't government issue ( though I work for the government ). Bag drop stated £3 on website and on info pack but turned out to be £5 on the day. We then had the great idea of putting one bag in the other thus only paying for one bag. Ha ha the gestapo bag police wouldn't allow that. One person one bag?. Changing tent too small. Wash station ran out of water.
Could go on but they were the biggest issues for us. We were going to make it a family day out but just came home instead when we finished the course. Disappointing and embarrassing for a major event like this. Probably going to stick with Total warrior, No ego and Spartan. Happy to pay but expect what I pay for.

This is my second time doing it, I have an awesome team that together we maid it. all the problem is with the Logs obstetrical. it was painful. this year 4 of my team members including me finished with shoulder injuries because the logs were very big . I just wish that when they set the obstetrical keep in mind the small groups.

The Ultimate Mud Run, Obstacle Race and Adventure Race Guide , USA 3.9 5.0 28 28 The course was great (much better than last years spot). The obstacles were pretty good and the lines weren't that bad. Appreciated that they closed some roads to allow traffic and
