Race Recap: RAM run Autumn Edition

By |October 8th, 2016|

The weekend started with out with the Ram run. Well actually it started out with the OCR Community League warm-up. We traveled to the UK with 6 members of team RAM_nl to do both RAM and Spartan. Since the League finals where planned on Saturday and both the actual Ram run and Spartan Beast on Sunday, we decided to at least join the pre-finals fun run on Saturday at Ram and just see what amount of distance we could cover without risking not being able to run the Spartan on Sunday.

Race Recap: Bonefrog Orlando 2016 – Missing a Marker But Finding New OCR Friends

By |October 6th, 2016|

After four months of being off from Obstacle Course Racing (OCR), I was excited to be getting back on a course. I was specially excited to be heading up to Orlando for my first Bonefrog Challenge. In fact, unlike my most recent races, I was actually up early (meaning before the alarm!) so I decided to head straight over and get this show moving. So, despite my GPS guiding me 'relatively near' the venue...which is pretty standard...I got there just after sunrise.

Spartan Race World Championship Ultra Beast Race Recap: Embrace Your Weaknesses, for They Will Make You Stronger

By |October 5th, 2016|

When you get into ultramarathons, especially ultra-OCRs, you will be taken through the highs and lows of performance and emotions. That makes running and watching them especially exciting. On any given day there is a good number of people could win the whole thing. Going into this event, there was a lot of hype regarding as many as 10 different guys who people thought could legitimately win the whole thing. Mine was one of the names being floated, which was an honor and put some more pressure on me. To share with you the joy and the experience of the event, here’s a race recap of the event and the drama about the competition. I’ll throw in helpful mini-tips for people looking to enter the ultra community or improve their racing.

Race Recap: Strong Viking Roskilde Edition – Denmark

By |October 5th, 2016|

Strong Viking Roskilde. The first time Strong Viking set foot in Denmark, and we were there! Six RAM strong we travelled to Denmark by train, being hissed at for whispering in a “silence compartment,” then flew to Copenhagen and met the female versions of Waldorf and Statler on the airport.

WTF Am I Doing Here? (Spartan WC Recap)

By |October 4th, 2016|

This is the Spartan World Championship race, and more specifically, the World Championship heat, where a couple hundred of the best athletes in our sport are waiting to race for the big money and TV glory. Everyone here has had to earn a spot by obtaining a Spartan coin, given out to the top 5 male and female finishers at the other races throughout the year. All of the other athletes in the corral have stood on a podium or been close enough to taste it.

Race Review: Hardcore Mudd Run

By |September 23rd, 2016|

The weekend of September 10th and 11th I got to attend an OCR called the Hardcore Mudd Run (HMR). Since the event is put on by firefighters and was occurring the weekend of September 11th, it seemed like a cool event to attend. As with most small OCRs that put on few events throughout the year, it had a mix of good and bad.

Pala (SoCal) Spartan Beast and Sprint

By |September 20th, 2016|

This weekend marked the return of Spartan Race to Southern California and the debut of a new venue at Pala Raceway. For years, Spartan Races, Tough Mudders, and other OCRs have been held at Vail Lake in Temecula. Love them or hate them, the endless, relentless hills overlooking and surrounding that venue were iconic to obstacle course racing in this part of the country. This year, all that changed, as the new owners of the Vail Lake property decided to rescind access to all of the various races that called Vail Lake home.

Race Recap: Tough Mudder Pittsburgh

By |September 19th, 2016|

Tough Mudder Pittsburgh made its return to the Pittsburgh area last week. Coopers Lake Campground hosted the event for the second year in a row. Some weather that rolled through the area Saturday night helped create some muddier conditions than those experienced on Saturday. For anyone considering which day of the weekend to run, I can try and shed some light on the differences between a Saturday run versus one on Sunday.

Race Recap: Dallas Savage Race

By |September 16th, 2016|

With their spot-on marketing, and Facebook posts from my east coast friends, I COULD NOT WAIT to run a Savage Race. Being that they don’t go further west than Texas, I decided to take matters into my own hands and signed up for the Dallas Savage Race on September 10, 2016.

Race Recap: BoldrDash at Rocky Point

By |September 15th, 2016|

For the past several years, the popular BoldrDash racing series has been a staple in Rhode Island. This year, they decided to try a new venue at Rocky Point Park located on the Narragansett Bay. The iconic spot was once a beloved amusement park until it closed down back in 1995. BoldrDash is hoping to breathe some life into the area once again and help rekindle old memories.
