I am OCR: Lucy White

I think everybody to some extent is or can be an “athlete”, BUT then there are those that are “born competitors”. I have been a competitor/adrenaline junkie my whole life. I eat, sleep, live, and breathe competition. The greatest compliment I was ever given was by a bodybuilding photographer and writer for Muscular Development Magazine, who was doing an interview with me. He told me, I was the first person he had ever met, that he could not ask “What is it that you do?”, but instead he had to ask, “What is it that you haven’t done?

Extreme Nation – Inaugural event more about quality of racers than quantity

From the starting line, you could see almost every obstacle on the 1.6 mile winding motocross-like course, sans the dirt and mud. At 9:00 sharp the first of the 19 male teams took off, with the next team leaving each minute after. The longest stretch of running without a true “man-made” obstacle was right out the gate, with maybe 250 yards before the fight began.

“Tough Love”

After meeting my boyfriend, we created a specialized program to help with my weaknesses and to focus on strength building for OCRs. I had realized over the prior race season which muscles needed the most work, and I incorporated lower lifting to assist with my running capability. Long story, short--with the new training, I began racing in the Elite category, and I won my first race in 2013. I did considerably better throughout the race season, and I was on track for participating in World’s 2013.

What the HELL Am I Doing Here?

As I stood in the crowd waiting to start my first Spartan Sprint last June, my heart started pumping, and I felt a sense of fear, excitement, and panic all at the same time. Many thoughts crept into my head but the main one that felt like it was screaming was: “What the hell am I doing here?”

“Mud & Obstacle” Magazine Review

January 14, 2014 marks the premier of issue #1 of Mud & Obstacle magazine. It’s significant because an American print magazine available at major retailers further legitimizes the sport of obstacle course racing and mud runs. It’s published by Active Interest Media, which publishes many niche enthusiast magazines such as The Box and Black Belt, which I read as a kid in the 70’s.

Winter Death Race: Reflections from Hell Freezing Over

By the nature of its definition, a race typically has a defined start and finish. What you do in the race is usually a clear individual activity or series of activities. In a triathlon, you know you’ll be swimming, cycling, and running. Even most mud runs and obstacle races present their participants with a map and/or a listing of everything they’ll encounter along the way. The Death Race is different because racers participate for an undetermined amount of time and have no idea what activities they must complete.
