Race Recap: Warrior Dash SoCal – Are They Even Trying Anymore?

By |March 22nd, 2016|

In 2012, my wife Anne and a couple of her friends did a Warrior Dash as one of her first obstacle course races. At the time, I was sidelined with an injury, and although I've done dozens of different OCRs in the intervening years, I had never done a Warrior Dash before last weekend. As a result, I was excited to give this one a try, as I've heard for years about Warrior Dash being one of "the big three" and the "gateway drug to OCR".

Race Recap – Spartan Houston – The Deluge!

By |March 21st, 2016|

March 12, just northwest of Houston, was the first time Spartan Race hit any city in Texas other than Burnet and Glen Rose. Spirits were high, as was the sun and the flood gauge. Nature decided to throw everything possible at the Spartan build crew. That means three things in Texas: rain, ants and snakes. Couple those in with a well laid out course and some great obstacle placement, you have yourself a great race for the first heats, and a progressively more dilapidated course the later you ran.

Berserkr Games Race Recap

By |March 18th, 2016|

Berserkr Games is not your typical OCR. This race takes place annually in mid-March, in Kingsville, TX at Rifles Only. First of all, you take a thrilling helicopter ride around the property before dropping into a chilly pond to start the race. The course is a flat 2.7 miles, which you can do up to four laps depending on which of the four race distances you are running.

Race Recap – Rugged Maniac – South Caroliona

By |March 17th, 2016|

Rugged Maniac kicked off its 2016 season with about 5,000 participants in South Carolina on Saturday. It was a beautiful day in the low 70’s – about 30 degrees warmer than last year! The venue, historic Boone Hall Farms, was the same but the event had a distinctly different feel this year compared with the previous four years I’ve run this course. The new vibe this year wasn’t just on the course, but off the course as well.

Let Them Change You: Transformation through OCR

By |March 16th, 2016|

Sean Corvelle asks “When was the last time you did something for the first time?” as he fires people up at the starting line of a Tough Mudder. I want to go a little deeper with this: “When was the last time you tackled something so big that it changed your life?”

Going to the Xtreme: Part 2: Do I need to shave my body?

By |March 15th, 2016|

Now that you have adopted your spandex shorts and are feeling race ready you take a look in the mirror but something does not seem right. You do not look like those elite racers lining up on the starting line from last weekend, so what gives? It is not that something is missing, it is that you still have something…body hair.

Race Recap: Terrain Mud Run Dallas, TX

By |March 10th, 2016|

Terrain Race Dallas was an excellent race to kick off our OCR racing season after taking the first two months of 2016 off. The race was held at Village Creek Motorcross in Fort Worth, TX and they offer both a 5K and 10K distance with competitive waves in both distances. We chose the 5K race. I was a bit apprehensive about the race being held on a motocross site because I envisioned endless loops on a dirt course up impossibly steep climbs and barreling down the ensuing declines.

Race Recap: Hannibal Race- Awkar, Lebanon

By |March 10th, 2016|

I was super excited when I found out I would have another chance to race in the Middle East. Timing for international races does not always pan out, especially when a country only has one race series. The Hannibal Race held their first race of 2016 in Awkar a neighborhood in Beirut, Lebanon.

As OCR facilities pop up throughout various towns, it is nice to see that we are finally getting a few permanent outdoor facilities up and running. The Ragnarok Run was held at OCR Land in Smiths Falls, Ontario and attracted racers from Ontario and Quebec.
