BattleFrog Series: BFX Las Vegas

By |March 1st, 2016|

The most intense way to check out a new to the west coast obstacle race series is to do as many laps of their course as possible. That's exactly what BattleFrog Xtreme (BFX) is all about: a special category for the crazies that want to be on course all day long and compete to see who can complete the most laps in the allotted time (8:15am-last lap starting before 2:45 pm). This weekend I took first place overall with seven laps (51.3km, 31.8mi). BFX Vegas was my second BFX, so this review/recap is geared towards people considering trying a BattleFrog and people trying to do better at multi-lap events like BFX.

Race Recap: BATTLEFROG NORCAL: The Race Where BattleFrog Converts Naysayers

By |February 24th, 2016|

The West Coast debut of BattleFrog has been overwhelmingly positive, but not without trepidations. Attendance has been light to moderate, but those who have gone have vocally enjoyed themselves tremendously. The initial grumbling about the “San Francisco” race being held at Lake Sonoma, which is a rather a long distance from the actual City by the Bay slowly quieted, as social media photos began to emerge of breathtaking views and promises of impressive elevation.

Race Recap: BattleFrog Xtreme LA

By |February 13th, 2016|

What could be more fun than running an obstacle race on a beautiful Saturday morning in Southern California, with snow on the nearby mountains, and warm Santa Ana winds blowing? How about bypassing the finish line, and going around and around on the course to see how many laps you can put on in a day?

The venue is located on beautiful wooded acreage and provided racers with an absolutely gorgeous multi-elevation terrain that looped in and out of ravines and gullies. Race Recap – HH12hr – Braving the Storm

By |February 11th, 2016|

Spartan Race is all about ripping people out of their comfort zones, testing their boundaries, and focusing a spotlight on any holes in an athlete’s training. Nowhere is this more obvious that in their 12h hurricane heat.

Race Recap – Polar Hero, Ottawa, Ontario

By |February 10th, 2016|

Winter racing has a few extra challenges compared with moderate temperature events. You have to plan how many layers are required based on an estimated time outdoors in the cold. You have to watch the weather to determine departure times so you can arrive at the venue in plenty of time to park and pick up your race kit and you have to hope that there are no road closures, accidents or rambling deer along the way to slow you down. Today, we were fortunate and made the 2 hour journey north with no incidents and with ample time to prepare and meet our fellow racers.

SoCal Spartan Weekend – A Study in Contrasts

By |February 7th, 2016|

Spartan Race kicked off its 2016 season in Southern California last weekend with back to back races at Vail Lake in Temecula. Immediately obvious on arriving at the venue was the distressing lack of water in the lake; with a drop of at least 10-15’ of depth since our last visit back in September, it was clear that the long California drought is far from over. This also left exposed a vast mud plain that was once the lake bottom and would play a role in the race.

SURVIVAL RUN NICARAGUA 2016: By the Numbers

By |February 5th, 2016|

SURVIVAL RUN NICARAGUA started on Wednesday morning at 7:00 am for the fourth and arguably the hardest year of the race. Sixty racers would show up on race day, and six racers would become official finishers this year at SURVIVAL RUN NICARAGUA. We break down the race by looking at the numbers as the event unfolded this year.

The 2016 OCR Season has arrived, and BattleFrog kicked off the year with it's long awaited debut on the West Coast. Not only was this BattleFrog's first event on the West Coast, but it was also the first time that Pro Athlete Ryan Atkins took on the role of course designer. For many Californians, this was the first BattleFrog experience and SoCal welcomed BF with open arms.
