Ignite the Night Snowshoe Race – Race Recap

By |January 22nd, 2016|

As the rain poured down and temperatures reached a balmy 6 degrees, we were a little hesitant if the snow would suffice for the 2nd annual Dion Ignite the Night Snowshoe Race. We packed a variety of outer wear and hit the road heading east about 90 minutes. We were excited that we were finally going to meet some of our fellow racers from online forums and this was a central meeting point that worked for 20 of us from Ottawa, Toronto, Kingston and Montreal.

Hannibal Race – Lebanon – Race Recap

By |December 22nd, 2015|

Mud Run Guide sent me all the way to the other side of the world to get the latest scoop on the expanding world of Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) by covering the 6km Hannibal Race in Le Plateau De Bakish, Lebanon. Just kidding, I happened to be in the area and I was drawn to the race like an OCR athlete to Icebugs. Located just 19 miles from the border of Syria, the course was a unique experience and I was glad I had the opportunity to attend. Here is a rundown of the event by category.

BattleFrog Championship 2015 – A Flat Course Can Be Tough – Race Review

By |December 21st, 2015|

I love a challenging course!!  I was fortunate to have an opportunity to go on a course preview Friday evening before the race with Mud Run Guide.  Normally, I like to run a race without having much more than an idea how long the course is certainly not the detailed location of obstacles!  But when you have a chance to do something like this at a championship...you do it. I was fairly confident I'd forget most of it once I got out on course Saturday and I was right.

Spartan Race Miami 2015 – Festival Lake – Race Review

By |December 11th, 2015|

The Spartan Race in Miami was the toughest race I've run since the race in Asheville...which was a Spartan Super in the mountains. That's particularly strange to say, considering how flat the Miami terrain is. But is wasn't the course itself that made it hard, it was the water! As much as 13 inches of rain in the days before the race!!

BattleFrog Series Miami II 2015 – Redemption – Race Review

By |December 8th, 2015|

It seems so long ago that I ran my first BattleFrog race, but it was only February of this year. So much has happened in between I suppose it's understandable. Two Tough Mudders, three Spartan races, a Savage race and three more BattleFrogs; not to mention a trip to the OCR World Championship mixed in. It's been a long road back to Miami and one of the most anticipated races of the year for me...so far anyway.

Race Recap: Viper 2 Four in Malaysia

By |December 7th, 2015|

We first heard about Viper Challenge a few months ago when the CEO, Selva Kumar, reached out to Junyong Pak about Viper 2 Four. Viper 2 Four is a 24-hour obstacle race. Participants are tasked with doing as many laps of the 10k (6.2 miles) course as they can in 24 hours.

Race Recap – Epic Series

By |November 28th, 2015|

How do you define the Epic Series? Sometimes, you can define something by what it isn't; in the British comedy Blackadder, sidekick Baldrick once wrote a definition of "Dog: not a cat". The Epic Series is not a mud run, it is not a strongman competition, and it is not the Crossfit Games - but it has elements of all of the above. The brain child of Aaron Ward and Tim Fitzpatrick, The Epic Series originally derived from Crossfit, and has undergone numerous changes as it has evolved through seven events since its inaugural run in April of 2013. It is a "functional fitness challenge". The Epic Race is divided into two parts; the basic race that everyone does, and a bonus Elite competition that was itself split into Strength and Endurance divisions.

For Chris Kyle: The Glen Rose Double Beast Weekend

By |November 23rd, 2015|

Some of you know me as the Chairman of the Chris Kyle Memorial Run that we hold every year in conjunction with the Spartan Beast in Glen Rose, Tx. The reason we do this at THIS race is that it's held, every year, at Rough Creek Ranch, the same location where Chris and his friend Chad Littlefield were shot and killed in February of 2013 while trying to help a former Marine suffering from severe PTSD.

Race Recap – Spartan Race Beast – Winnsboro, South Carolina

By |November 22nd, 2015|

Spartan Race brought a new obstacle to South Carolina this year – the freezing cold! As I approached Carolina Adventure World where this race is held every year, my dashboard thermometer read 31 degrees. Seriously. 31 degrees. In South Carolina in November.

A Comparison: World’s Toughest Mudder 2014 vs. 2015

By |November 20th, 2015|

With World’s Toughest Mudder in its 2nd year in Las Vegas (5th year overall), the inevitable question athletes that went to one and not the other is how did 2015 compare to 2014? While the terrain was very similar, the challenges faced were very different. Here is a quick rundown for those that did one year and not the other.
