Mud & Obstacle Magazine

Reviewed 1/14/14 by Bob Mulholland

January 14, 2014 marks the premier of issue #1 of Mud & Obstacle magazine. It’s significant because an American print magazine available at major retailers further legitimizes the sport of obstacle course racing and mud runs. It’s published by Active Interest Media, which publishes many niche enthusiast magazines such as The Box and Black Belt, which I read as a kid in the 70’s.

The magazine does an excellent job of covering subjects in every area of OCR. Topics range from an interview with one of the top athletes in OCR, Hobie Call, to analyzing the effects of Tough Mudder’s Arctic Enema obstacle. I was pleased to see articles covering training, nutrition, blurbs of various races, inspirational athletes to motivate all readers, protecting your finances when registering, and what gear and racing apparel work best. A plethora of excellent photos round out the pages of Mud & Obstacle.

The magazine is already surveying readers to find out what topics interest them so that they can be covered in future issues. This is great to see since I believe all magazines should be shaped by the readership and not dictated by the publisher and advertisers. Speaking of advertising it makes up about 19% of the magazine, which is a good percentage. I hate to read magazines where every other page is another ad.

Although officially the magazine was released today there have been earlier sightings of it at Barnes & Noble newsstands on the west and east coasts. A subscription is the best option to choose to save 36% and get the magazine delivered quickly. Mud & Obstacle is published bimonthly. You can subscribe at www.mudandobstacle.com.
