Freshly cleared by my physical therapist to return to racing in the non-competitive heats, I jumped at the chance to mark my return to obstacle course racing with the fun and fast Warrior Dash. Though there was no hope of a repeated podium performance from last year’s effort at Warrior Dash, I approached the day eager to return to the open waves for a fun run. Spartan is upping the ante this year for the 24-Hour Spartan Ultra World Championships which returns to Iceland for the second year. The event is set to take place on December 8, 2018, with more than $125,000 in cash prizes on the line.

For some, their OCR season is in full swing. For me, the Spartan Stadium Sprint at Citi Field was my first race of the year and it didn’t disappoint! The race was held on Saturday, April 21 at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets (Let’s go Mets!). For those not familiar with New York City, the stadium is in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park in the borough of Queens and was about 110 miles from my home in New Jersey.

It seems as though we hear about over-training pretty often, and as an OCR trainer, I hear the question from my clients somewhat often. “Am I over-training?” I usually hear this after a hard week or a series of hard weeks before a de-load week.

For some athletes this might mean their markers of inflammation (consider dumbing this down for mass consumption) are elevated, or their connective tissues aren’t healing. For other athletes, this might mean their happy neurotransmitters are going down while hormones such as cortisol are going up. (again – not everyone knows the negative effects of elevated cortisol – a short explanation here might be useful)
