This weekend we did a double race weekend. Saturday the RAM run and Sunday the Spartan Race Beast Windsor. This was going to be my first ever Spartan Trifecta, so I was really excited! My knee got a bit worse overnight, but I felt up to it! We were on a tight schedule, having to return the car at 7 and fly home at 8, so we were happy to be able to start just before noon. At the starting area, we met up with two RAM friends volunteering there.
This is the Spartan World Championship race, and more specifically, the World Championship heat, where a couple hundred of the best athletes in our sport are waiting to race for the big money and TV glory. Everyone here has had to earn a spot by obtaining a Spartan coin, given out to the top 5 male and female finishers at the other races throughout the year. All of the other athletes in the corral have stood on a podium or been close enough to taste it.
Spartan Race's Director of Sport Joe Distefano and Vice President of Production Mike Morris take Margaret cover the Spartan Race World Championship rules, cutoff times, and the whole experience - what it will be like on the course for athletes running the Beast - and Ultra Beast courses this weekend at Lake Tahoe. Rules, tips, debunking Joe De Sena's advice to "just stay home" and much more.
Margaret was lucky enough to grab a few minutes with the man behind it all, Spartan Race Founder Joe De Sena - simultaneously the most loved & hated, respected & feared individual in all of the sport of OCR. M covered the new obstacles, new rules, and the difficulty of the new course criss-crossing the ski trails of Squaw Valley.
As this is #RoadtoTahoe week, I decided to take a look at the race that is the Spartan World Championships shadow, and like Peter Pan’s, it has a personality all its own. The Tahoe Ultra Beast is going to be an event that probably deserves its own weekend, but what better way to showcase the mental imbalance of the racers, than adding it to the already stacked lineup. With two Ultra Beasts in the past 4 weeks (Vermont and Sun Peaks) and with WTM only a few weeks away, it will be interesting to see who shows up, and who shows up to race.
Evan heads to Old Valley CrossFit to do a partner workout with 9-time American Ninja Warrior Brian Orosco. Could this be the first workout that makes Evan lose his lunch?
Our bud Evan "Rocket" Dollard is back with a new episode of Spartan Strong, this time he takes to the El Moro Trails in CA to run some good old fashioned hill sprints, chase a bunny, and work on his pistol squats.
Evan takes to the steps of Culver City with Darrell Michnowicz of Raw Calisthenics. Expect plenty of body weight exercises, plenty of stairs, and a total lack of shirts.
